Lisbon is hilly and walkable but the trams and viewpoints reward a neighborhood-clustered plan. Four days covers Alfama, Belém, Bairro Alto and a Sintra day trip without backtracking.

Where to stay: neighborhoods that make sense

• Alfamamedieval maze below the castle with fado bars and miradouro viewpoints, atmospheric but hilly
• Baixa and Chiadoflat, central and elegant, the most convenient base for first-timers
• Bairro Altoquiet by day, packed street-party bars by night, stay nearby rather than in it if you value sleep
• Gracalocal feel, the best sunset viewpoints in the city and lower prices than the center

What to eat in Lisbon

• Pastel de nata at Manteigariawarm custard tarts for about 1.40 EUR, better queue than the famous Belem shop
• Bifanagarlicky pork sandwich at O Trevo or any tasca, around 3.50 EUR with a beer for 1.50 EUR more

The metro runs from the airport to the center in about 25 minutes for 1.80 EUR, or an Uber costs 12-15 EUR. In town walk plus metro and trams with a rechargeable Viva Viagem card - a 24-hour transit pass is about 6.80 EUR.
